Godsmack is big in the US, like ’em or not. They’d three consecutive No. 1 albums between 2003 and 2010 with Faceless, IV, and The Oracle, have scored over two dozen Prime Ten hits over their profession, and have offered hundreds of thousands of information. But Godsmack needed to cancel their South American tour not too long ago because of lack of ticket gross sales.
So what is the deal? As Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin defined in an interview with Metallic-Roos, the band is essentially an American band. Larkin mentioned he is not positive that Godsmack may afford to go and tour Australia, and in addition reveals that the band has by no means had a financially profitable tour in Europe.
A fast take a look at the stats on Setlist.FM reveals that regardless of their large success within the US, Godsmack hasn’t actually performed a variety of reveals exterior North America. Godsmack has clocked practically 1,200 reveals in the US, 78 in Canada, after which it drops all the way down to 31 in Germany, 24 within the UK, after which single digits all the way in which down.
“The honest truth is, can we afford to come [to Australia]?” mentioned Larkin. “It sucks for us as a result of we’re right here. We’re massive in America. We’re an American band. The radio loves us right here. If it weren’t for them, we would not be a giant band. And we did not actually have the success worldwide that now we have right here.
“We don’t run a bunch of tapes; we don’t do that shit,” he continued. “We’re a live band. But what we do like to do is people pay these exorbitant ticket prices and when they come to see us, we have a big show. And we blow shit up with pyro and we have video screens. And there might be lasers that night. We have moving drum risers — all this shit that’s part of us and it’s been us.
“Then we go to England and play, or Australia and play, and we have a rag behind us and a drum set. And it is not a crutch — we nonetheless went and we do it — however we by no means had the expansion to the place we have been sufficiently big, say in Australia, to come back there and current what we do, like us reside, this badass present that we have at all times achieved and that is as a lot part of us as our devices. We carry out and we like to do it. And so we’re pleased with it and now we have a variety of delight there. And so typically it looks like they don’t seem to be getting what we’re as a result of we will not afford to convey all that shit.
“It is simply loopy, man, this enterprise. We have 20-some individuals on the highway crew. It is rooms and flights — it is loopy how a lot it prices to tour the world, particularly now in any case this bullshit pandemic bullshit. Touring Europe, man, was simply… You are actually dropping cash. And we did it. We might do it anyway.
“We’ve never — I’ll say this right here — we’ve never made money in Europe ever. Period. And we’ve been there 15 times or whatever. We keep going back because we have a cult following where we can draw a couple of thousand people in these rooms, and we love to play for ’em, but there’s never been a moment where we can say, ‘Here’s what we are.'”
I assume it simply feels loopy that Godsmack hasn’t had an enormous profession exterior the US given their recognition right here. Although I am positive there are many artists that command related numbers in gross sales abroad that may’t make a buck within the US. Thankfully for Godsmack followers round right here (or sadly relying in your tastes), the band is focusing the rest of their profession on touring solely.
